Happy Down syndrome awareness month, Day 8. Today we will be dispelling a myth. Adults with Down syndrome are not “perpetual children,” they are adults, and they happen to have Down syndrome. They are not always happy and they experience a full range of emotions. However, 97% of individuals with Down syndrome are happy with with their lives. Maybe we could learn something from that.
We have so enjoyed getting to know many adults during our Afternoon Club virtually meetings every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 4pm. Mondays are just for the girls, Wednesday are just guys and Fridays are for anyone. While this club is for individuals of any age, our regular members are mostly young adults. They have some very lively conversations and enjoy many of the same things as their peers. One of the great things about getting together virtually means that anyone across the state is welcome to join us. Tomorrow at the Friday afternoon club we are going to work out together. Email us at info@dsaane.org to request the zoom link to this event. We will visit for about 20 minutes then complete a 20 minute workout. The intensity of the workout is up to the participant. You can go all in or make it a much lighter work out.. What a great way to start the weekend and to practice and get in shape for the Big 10 Walking Challenge starting soon. We hope you can join us! #dsam2020 #dsaane #downsyndromeawareness #downsyndromeadvocate Happy Down Syndrome Awareness Month, Day 7. Happy Down Syndrome Awareness Day 6.
Did you know that one of the best ways to raise awareness during October, (and really all year long) is to wear Down syndrome awareness apparel and accessories, and to use Down syndrome awareness items in your everyday lives? Did you also know that there are quite a few local families her in Nebraska that make and sell Down syndrome related items? It is always better to support local businesses, and often these sales also benefit the Nebraska Down syndrome community. We also know that many of the craft mom's listed would be able to do custom items if you wanted to work with them to create something. just for you. If you are a self advocate or if you have a business or fundraiser where you offer Nebraska made Down syndrome awareness items, please let us know so we can add you to this post. Each photo above is linked to the website or Facebook page for you to use to find out more information. Just click on the photo to see more. Happy Down Syndrome Awareness Month, Day 5! Over the weekend one of our families asked us for a fact graphic that could be shared with friends and family. A few hours later this graphic was done and ready to be used to spread awareness and facts. Being able to react and respond in a timely manner to family requests, is one of the things we love about Down Syndrome Advocates in Action Nebraska. You think it, we make it happen. Please feel free to share this educational graphic as you see fit. #dsaane
#dsam2020 #dsadvocate ![]() Happy Down Syndrome Awareness Month, Day 4! DSAA NE is a 100% volunteer run organization. What that means for our families is that donations can go directly to work to provide, awareness and education. But what it also means is that we owe a great deal of thanks to the men and women who work tirelessly at their paid job to provide support and resources for their own families, but still have time to reach out and share their knowledge, time, energy and resources with other families in the community. We would not be able to work toward our mission, without the hard work of our Board. We thank Deb Safarik, Angie Willey, Shauna Graham, Randy Willey, Suzanne McDonald, Kiffany Conner and Beth Cole for all the work that they do. We would like to also thank all the other volunteers who work hard to put on and attend events, share posts, advocate and work for the good of the community. Many of these volunteers sacrifice a great deal to make Down syndrome advocacy a priority in their lives. We would not be where we are today without their help, hard work and determination. We as a community thank our volunteers for their passion, dedication, and service over the years. There is always room for growth, if you would like to work on a committee to help DSAA NE extend its reach, host events, manage membership, advertise, fund raise, or any other area of strength you might have, please let us know. There will always be room for those who wish to share their passion and love for individuals with Down syndrome to benefit the greater community. #DSAM2020 #DSAANE |
